USING OSTEOPATHIC PRINCIPLES AND PHILOSOPHY IN SPECIALTY MEDICINE
Oct. 7-10, 2017
Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia
Leslie M. Ching, DO, program chair
Hosted by the American Osteopathic Association, OMED is an annual medical conference bringing together thousands of osteopathic physicians, medical students and other health professionals from across the country.
The AAO’s program at OMED presented various viewpoints on incorporating osteopathic principles into the practice of different specialties. The AAO partnered with several specialty colleges to provide lectures and hands-on instruction from specialists with clinical experience in internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, family medicine and sports medicine. In addition, a workshop on the Stiles-Laughlin technique, a very useful functional approach, was presented.
Kenneth J. Lossing, DO, delivered the annual Thomas L. Northup Lecture. Dr. Lossing was the AAO's 2014-15 president, and he has practiced osteopathic manipulative medicine in northern California for more than 20 years.
AAO Speakers Receive Sponsorship Awards
Two of the AAO's speakers for OMED received research sponsorship awards from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Aunna Herbst, DO, addressed functional medicine in primary care, and Kendi L. Hensel, DO, PhD, discussed pregnancy research.
This is the second year that the AOA chose to grant six research speaker sponsorship awards in lieu of developing a program that would compete with the osteopathic specialty colleges’ didactic sessions at OMED. To qualify for an award, a speaker must be a DO or PhD, and he or she must be disseminating the latest evidenced-based research and/or programs in the field of the specialty college.
