ONMM programs are unique in their dedication to the study of neuromusculoskeletal (NMM) disorders and the practice of osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM).
There is a dedication to the study of osteopathic principles and practice built into the program requirements. The intent of this specialty was to have a place of recognition and study for those interested in pursuing the primary specialty originally known as OMM. It evolved into the specialty of neuromusculoskeletal medicine/osteopathic manipulative medicine (NMM/OMM) and the residency programs in that specialty is known today as Osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine (ONMM) Residency Programs.
It is, and always has been, a primary specialty.
Completing an ACGME-accredited ONMM residency program will provide a strong foundation for osteopathic evaluation of neuromusculoskeletal disorders and their treatment in outpatient and inpatient, medical, surgical, pediatric, and OBGYN patients.
Since 2014, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) have moved towards a unified accreditation system for Graduate Medical Education (GME) by merging programs completed on July 1, 2020. ACGME milestones specific to Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM) residencies have been developed and implemented to help review resident performance through the course of residency.
The Resident AAO (RAAO) and AAO Post-Graduate Committee (PTC) have worked to develop a set of suggested ONMM residency guidelines that programs may choose to apply to help achieve residency milestones. We are excited to present these guidelines here as a resource for both residents and faculty to apply to their individual program needs!
Understanding The Role Of The AOA And ACGME In ONMM Board Certification
The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) confers primary board certification in neuromusculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine (NMM/OMM). When our training was through the AOA, there were two routes to board certification in NMM/OMM, via two distinct residency programs: a traditional three-year program (two years dedicated to NMM/OMM and a rotating internship, either as part of the program or as a separate TRI), and the one year Plus One residency programs. There were also integrated programs that led to both NMM/OMM certification and another primary board certification.
